Northern California’s largest ski resorts close due to COVID-19 concerns

Winter is coming, but Tahoe is closing.

As Tahoe gets its first major snowstorm of the season, several of Lake Tahoe’s biggest ski resorts have shut down in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19 including Sugar Bowl, Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood, and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Vail Resorts, which owns the 3 largest resorts, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood, has closed their resorts for one week from March 15-22 and they’ll be reassessing on Friday, March 20, 2020. They’ve stated “All our scheduled employees, both seasonal and year-round, will be paid during this upcoming eightday period, without needing to use any vacation or sick time”. – Read more

Alterra Mountain Co. said its closing Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, as well as Big Bear and Mammoth Mountain beginning March 15 until further notice. – Read more

Sierra-at-Tahoe will be suspending operations on Sunday, March 15, for at least 72 hours.
