The East Bay Science Cafe is an informal forum for discussing interesting and relevant scientific issues and is held on the first Wednesday of every month at Cafe Valparaiso in Albany.
Join a casual evening of conversation with members of the scientific community presenting different topics each time and encouraging audience questions during and after the event.
What determines the complexity of life?
Darwin described how evolution produced “endless forms most beautiful,” yet he was unaware of genetics and the laws of inheritance. Our genomes provide the ultimate record of evolution, and evolution explains many fascinating aspects of our genomes.
This cafe will explore how genomics has deepened our understanding of evolution in ways Darwin never could have imagined.
Dr. Nachman received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, 1983, with a B.A. in Zoology. He then went on to get a PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan in 1990. He is now the director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and professor in Integrative Biology, at UC Berkeley. His interests lie in population and evolutionary genetics and genomics, the genetics of speciation, the genetics of adaptation, and mammalian molecular and chromosomal evolution.
