Friday Nights at the de Young the museum stays open late and hosts all sorts of interesting events, concerts, art projects and lectures. Although regular admission prices still apply to visit the museum’s galleries, all of the events below are in the public spaces of the museum are completely free and open to the publicC
Live music by Artistic Beings: The Music of the Pyramids paying tribute to King Tut featuring Idris Ackamoor, composer/multi-instrumentalist and cofounder of legendary 1970s African jazz ensemble the Pyramids. Wilsey Court; 6:30–7:15 and 7:45–8:30 p.m
Live painting. Experience the artistic process of live painting by artists Steve Javiel, Chris de Leon, Bay Fitted, and Malik Seneferu. Stick around for the end of the night when all of the finished artwork will be presented. 5:45–8:30 p.m.
Hair braiding and jewelry making. The teens of Mo’ Magic host an interactive hair braiding and jewelry making demonstration. 5:45–8:30 p.m.
DJ Mpenzi AfroBeat DJ set. DJ Mpenzi is from Nairobi, Kenya, and promises a wonderful blend of AfroSoul music with his “Unwind Mix” of African, Cuban, and Chicago beats that will keep you moving. 5:45–6:30 p.m.
African drum procession by BumpityThump Drum Troupe. A drum procession sure to lift the spirits of the night. 7:15-7:30 p.m.
Hands-on art making for everyone with “art diva” Kim Erickson. Make an Adinkra cloth using stamps. 6:00–8:30 p.m.
Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders. Join us in a sneak preview screening of Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders, a new PBS series about the intersection of music with life, politics, and culture around the world. Created by San Francisco’s Talbot Players media company, Sound Tracks will have its production team on hand to discuss this exciting new television series. 7:30 p.m.
