This exhibition highlights the journey of book-making possibilities, featuring: rainbow pride artist books, a choice of two set books, and recent work by members.
Rainbow Pride Artist Books:
Last spring, HBC was the third recipient of a 30-by-20-foot Rainbow Pride flag, retired from San Francisco’s Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro neighborhood. The flag was refreshed for the opening of the Castro Street Fair and first flew on the day of Dianne Feinstein’s passing, giving it historical significance for many.
The flag was divided into 10-inch by 20-foot sections, with each participating HBC member receiving a piece containing all its colors. Participants are tasked with transforming their section into a book art object, contributing to a collective celebration of its legacy.
Set Books:
The exhibition includes diverse interpretations of two titles from, the late, Andrew Moorhouse’s Fine Press Poetry, in Rochdale, England.
Grimoire – New Scottish Folk Tales, wonderfully grim poems by Robin Robertson with expressive stark Drawings by Tim Robertson.
A Clockwork Diorama, a love story told in three-line verses by David Harsent complemented by 15 copperplate engravings by Veta Gorner.
Responding to the content and imagery of the book, each binder chooses the structure, colors, materials, and embellishments that communicate their interpretation.
Recent work by members:
The diverse skills and interests of HBC members represent many disciplines within the book arts tradition. This guarantees the annual exhibition will include an abundance and variety of work.
Mix and mingle with the artists, printers and bookbinders of the Hand Bookbinders of California.
This special viewing of the exhibit lets you take a closer look at the books and meet the binders. Find out what the special challengers where in working with a retired flag, talk to binders about why they chose the text they bound, and see the different interpretations of the two set books. It’s a great way to see the exhibit while enjoying snacks and refreshments.
Join us Saturday, June 7th at 5pm for this intimate gathering of book arts enthusiasts.
