Ballads About the Machinery of the Heavens
Before telescopes, calendars, or grant funding, humans explained the sky through song. They named the wandering lights above them, assigned them motives, and occasionally asked for mercy — and less occasionally for favors. Tonight’s program, Songs for Celestial Bodies, continues that tradition in a modest way. Given the heaven’s general indifference, these selections are not likely to influence planetary motion, though you will be forgiven for being moved.
Cilantro is a band from San Francisco formed around the songs of singer/guitarist Mars Wagner. Her songs are requiems of memory, drawing from beach cliffs and magnolias, with heart-on-sleeve lyrics and swooning melodies. Cilantro is alt indie rock by, for, and about love and lovers.
Bill Leigh is a San Francisco singer-songwriter known for complex but catchy songs, emotionally resonant lyrics, and careful craftsmanship. His solo performances showcase his expressive tenor voice and intricate guitar work, while his recordings feature bold vocal harmonies and art-pop sensibilities. Bill is the former editor-in-chief of Bass Player magazine, long-time lead singer of Debased: A Pixies Tribute (as “White Francis”), and former music director of original funk band Stymie & the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra.
Hosted by star hustler E.G. Phillips who advises you to “keep looking up.”
