420 at Hippie Hill is a well-known San Francisco tradition, bringing tens of thousands of people from all over to Robin Williams Meadow (formerly Sharon Meadow) to celebrate the right to use cannabis.
In previous years, this “festival” was unpermitted and unofficial. It was awesome, but the event was growing larger every year, with increased violence, and the amount of trash left behind was unbelievable. Seriously… it was 11 tons in 2016.
To avoid a shutdown and make sure to make the event safe for everyone, the city actually permitted the event for a few years, bringing in sponsorships to help pay for fencing all around the perimeter of Sharon Meadows, increased security, port-o-potties (so necessary), food vendors/trucks, plus a sound system and DJs for entertainment. But the official event was cancelled in 2024.
2025 Update: According to ABC7, the “official” 420 celebration is canceled for 2025. But that doesn’t mean all hope is lost. If there’s one thing you can count on, is people to show up anyway and celebrate.
Will you get arrested for 420?
If you’re just enjoying yourself, not being a d*ck and not breaking any of the rules, then you’re probably fine. But note, smoking marijuana is still sadly against federal law (the state and the city tend to look the other way), so there’s still always a slight chance of a crack down, but we highly doubt it.
The “Duh” Rules of 420
- Don’t leave trash behind (leave-no-trace; bring a garbage bag, fill it up and take it home)
- Don’t bring tents, glass, generators, etc. into the park
- Don’t destroy anything; don’t be a jerk
- Don’t sell anything without a permit. Selling cannabis is not permitted by anyone.
- Don’t trash the local neighborhood; if you’re a jerk and peeing in someone’s front garden in the Upper Haight, do you think the neighbors will want this to happen again next year?

- 10:30 am – The “unofficial” vendors usually begin to arrive
- 1 pm – The crowds start to get a bit thick as does the haze of smoke over the crowd
- 3 pm – It’s now wall-to-wall stoners
- 4:20 pm – It’s go time: crowd is at their peak, drum beats get more frenzied and hippie girls twirl faster as 4:20 approaches

Street Parking, please respect the neighborhood and DO NOT block driveways! Parking in the neighborhoods surrounding Golden Gate Park is EXTREMELY limited. We highly encourage taking public transport, ride-sharing, biking or walking instead of driving. Please be sure to look at signs to avoid parking tickets. Do not keep any valuables in your car.
