September 11, 1972, was the Opening Day of revenue passengerservice. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) opened with Fremont to Oakland service including 28 miles of tracks and 12 stations. BART carries 100,000 during the first week of service with eight two- and three-car trains.
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is a heavy-rail public transit system that connects the San Francisco Peninsula with cities across the East Bay. BART operates in five counties (San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara) with 131 miles of track and 50 stations, carrying approximately 405,000 trips on an average weekday.
