California Has Best View of First Meteor Shower of 2021
The “Quadrantids” is 2021’s first major meteor shower. Unfortunately for 2021 a bright moon close to the radiant of the shower will light up the sky on the expected peak night (late January 2 until dawn January 3)

Typically this meteor shows can produce 50-100 meteors per hour in a dark sky, the peak time is very narrow and in 2021 it’s expect to be able to see 25 meteors/hour
In 2021 the International Meteor Organization gives the peak as January 3 at 14:30 UTC. (6:30am in San Francisco) If that prediction of the peak holds true, western North America has a good shot at viewing the shower at its best during the predawn hours on early Sunday morning, January 3.
How best to view meteor showers?
- Get away from city lights
- Give yourself at least 15-30 minutes to let your eyes adjust for the dark
- Meteor watching is a waiting game
