Great America Announces 2021 Reopening Date
California’s Great America becomes the first theme park in the state to announce their reopening date for 2021, after being closed for all of 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic.
Thanks to OC Register for sharing the news.
On January 28, the park announced that their 2021 Opening Day will be May 22.
In their announcement, they stated “We continue to monitor state guidelines and work with industry and government officials to ensure our reopening plan meets all required health and safety regulations.
Despite Great America’s ambitious plan, the state’s safety reopening guidelines will take precedence. Under the current state’s guidelines, Great America can only reopen once Santa Clara County reaches Tier 4, or the yellow tier, which is the least restrictive level.
When the park does reopen, several operational changes will be in effect. As expected, the park will be limiting capacity and masks will be required. The park has upgraded its technology and procedures as well. Guests will enter through a thermal screening that will check temperatures and the rides entry turnstiles will now be touchless.

Although the parent company, Cedar Fair, announced the 2021 reopening dates of many of their theme parks around the country, they did not announce the reopening date for their other California theme park, Knott’s Berry Farm.
California’s Great America was the first Californian theme park to announce they would not open for 2020, so it’s fitting that they were the announce their 2021 opening date.
