New 10-Foot-Tall “Bayview” Greeting in SF
Installation began this morning for a new greeting to the Bayview. 10-foot tall* letters that will spell out “Bayview” as part of the community-designed “Bayview Parks Project” at Meade and Third will be visible from the northbound 101 Bayshore Freeway near the Third Street exit.
The letters went up on April 26. Made of cast-in-place concrete, the letters are designed to be visible from the Bayshore freeway, signaling the arrival into the city from the southeast.
* Please note that some press materials say the sign is 10-feet-tall, others say it’s 8-feet-tall. We’re trying to clarify.
Over the next few months, the individual letters will be overlaid with glass and ceramic mosaic tile whose colors celebrate the community’s African and Native American heritage plus a new landscape and trees.
The anticipated competition date is the end of June or early July.
Please note that the site is not meant for people visiting, but more as a greeting for people to view from the freeway or the exit.
About the Bayview Gateway Project Update
In an effort to identify and beautify the entrances to this southeastern neighborhood, Public Works has teamed up with the Bayview Hill Neighborhood Association and the design firm HOK on the Bayview Gateway Project. The project aims to revitalize the intersection of Third and Meade streets with the installation of tall concrete letters that spell out “BAYVIEW” and are covered in beautiful glass and ceramic mosaic. Native California wildflowers and other drought-resistant landscape features will surround them.
