Event Details

Thanks to KPIX and Hoodline for letting us know the sad news that days are numbered for a beloved bakery that’s widely known and Japantown’s oldest business, Benkyodo Company.

The shop, which opened in 1906, makes traditional hand-made Japanese rice cakes, manju and mochi, announced that they are hoping someone will buy the business, otherwise they will close the shop “after the new year” and go into retirement.

But you still have a little bit of time before they close (the official closing date hasn’t been announced yet). Benkyodo announced on their website that after the New Year they will reopen with our normal operating hours on Tue, Jan 11 for walk-ins only. Have a Happy New Year! We are not accepting email or phone orders. No credit cards, cash only.”
