Come celebrate Black Maternal Health Week 2022 with BElovedBIRTH Black Centering’s Film Screening & Discussion Party!
In honor of Black Maternal Health Week 2022, BElovedBIRTH Black Centering is hosting a Film Screening & Discussion Party for “On the Pulse of Life”, a beautiful film by local filmmaker Jessica Jones, made in collaboration with BElovedBIRTH.
Who is Jessica Jones?
Jessica Jones is an Emmy nominated documentary filmmaker with a passion for creating powerful and engaging visual content. Her work focuses on community, cultural representation, and race with a specific focus on both Black and multiracial identity, often with a focus on women and the arts through character-driven narratives.
What is “On the Pulse of Life”?
“On the Pulse of Life” is part of a national short film project called “Futures We Dream” sponsored by the Alliance for Media Arts + Culture and the Smithsonian Museum. The Futures We Dream is a series of eight short films commissioned and produced for the FUTURES exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Arts + Industries Building in Washington, DC. Jessica Jones is one of 9 award-winning independent filmmakers that created these works in partnership with The Alliance for Media Arts + Culture. The filmmakers were challenged to tell vibrant, optimistic stories about a future close at hand, just as we are emerging from one of the darkest times in recent history.
Jones, a new Black mother herself, collaborated with BElovedBIRTH to create the film “On the Pulse of Life”, and featured three BElovedBIRTH mamas and Program Director Jyesha Wren, CNM. “On the Pulse of Life” explores birth justice and equity for Black people, and shares a vision for a brighter birthing future. After the film is shown there will be a discussion panel with Jessica Jones, Jyesha Wren, and our BElovedBIRTH mamas from the film.
