The Dahlia is San Francisco’s official flower and is currently in bloom mid August 2022 through approximately Labor Day. Check out the Dahlia Garden in Golden Gate Park (map) by the Conservatory of Flowers to see these beautiful flowers in their peak form.

See if you can spot Dahlias in distinctive shapes like “Collarette” “Ball” and “Cactus” – with some blooms as big as soccer balls.

About SF’s Dahlia Garden
Plans to build the Dahlia Garden were introduced in 1940 by Interstate Commerce Commission Director Richard T. Eddy and Park Superintendent John McLaren. Their intent was to cultivate dahlia species from all over the world and create an international garden. Learn more at @sfdahliasociety

Located inside the oval of the Conservatory driveway turnaround, the kidney-shaped garden is tended by the Dahlia Society of California, whose members nurture its some 1,000 plants into full bloom by late August. Learn more.

2022 Annual Dahlia Show

Recognizing the metaphor of turning over time from a “daisy-like wildflower to a cosmopolitan beauty,” the Board of Supervisors in 1926 voted the dahlia as the official flower of San Francisco. With our cool summers and moist foggy air, dahlias thrive here with peak bloom coming every August. Barring wars (and pandemics) the Dahlia Society of California has hosted their annual flower show since 1917.

See over 1,000 dahlias in a sea of colors, shapes and sizes complete for awards like largest (and smallest) flower and “Nature’s Oddity” for the most weird and wonderful bloom. The show features breeds from around the world, but all lovingly grown locally in the Bay Area.

Saturday and Sunday, August 20-21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Sunday ends at 4.p.m.), County Fair Building, 9th Ave. and Lincoln, Golden Gate Park, S.F., Free. sfdahlias.org
