Black Family Day at UC Davis is a time of festivity and joy as students and families congregate on the quad in the warm spring air. Black Family Day began during the spring of 1971 when students from the Black Student Union held a BBQ on the quad. Their intent was to celebrate themselves and to take a stand against the hxstorically and culturally exclusionary ideologies on campus.
Every year marks a monumental step towards Black empowerment and strengthening of our community and families. The family reflects the resilience, diversity, and openness of black culture. Over the years we have hosted countless lectures, speakers, entertainers, entertainment groups, vendors, etc to celebrate the achievements of the Black community and to educate about contemporary issues. One such speaker being Maya Angelou. Black Family Day continues to be a celebration of resilience, diversity, and openness of Black culture while recognizing the achievements of the Black community.
This year Black Family Day on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 in the UC Davis Quad at the Memorial Union. The event will start at noon and include the Children’s Fair, Craft and Food Vendors, and live performances from student groups and local artists from Sacramento and the Bay Area. The divine nine at UC Davis will also be hosting Stompfest from 7 to 9 pm. This is a free event open to the public and we invite the community to join us.
