BART has made the historic purchase of brand-new fare gates to be installed systemwide as part of its latest effort to improve the customer experience and overhaul safety in the system. The new fare gates bring a new look and improved experience, offering state-of-the-art technology that will boost safety by reducing fare evasion, enhancing access for people in wheelchairs and those who bring bikes and strollers on BART, and optimizing the reliability and maintenance needs of the fare gates.

The West Oakland pilot gates opened in December 2023. 12 more stations will begin work by the end of 2024 and full deployment systemwide will be completed by the end of 2025.

The Next 12 Stations

The next four stations to get new fare gates are:

  • Civic Center (platform gate replaced April 2024, work on the concourse gates was completed August 29, 2024)
  • Fruitvale (work began August 13, 2024 and was completed on August 21, 2024)
  • 24th St./Mission (work will begin in Sept 2024)
  • Richmond (work will begin in Sept 2024)

The following eight stations to begin work before the end of 2024 are:

  • Antioch (work will begin in Sept 2024)
  • Coliseum (work will begin in Sept 2024)
  • SFO (work will begin in Oct 2024)
  • 16th St/Mission (work will begin in Oct 2024)
  • Powell St. (work will begin in Oct 2024)
  • Montgomery St. (work will begin in Oct 2024)
  • 12th St/Oakland City Center (work will begin in Nov 2024)
  • Warm Springs (work will begin in Nov 2024)

Civic Center Station is the first station in the system with multiple sets of the new BART gates. BART has successfully installed Next Generation Fare Gates at Civic Center, Fruitvale, and West Oakland stations. Work is expected to begin next week on the installation of new fare gates at two more stations:

  • 24th Street/Mission
  • Richmond

BART will replace more than 700 fare gates at all 50 stations systemwide by the end of 2025. Funding for the new gates comes from local, state, and federal sources. We thank the San Francisco County Transportation Authority for providing $12.5 million to cover 50% of the 8 San Francisco County stations.
