For his first First Friday show E.G. Phillips invites songwriters Mardi Morillo and Alex Walsh for a tribute to one of the most ubiquitous and universal forms of popular song — the “Love Song” — through what exactly constitutes a song that fits that billing may be open to “interpretation.”
After losing vision in one eye, Mardi Morillo quit his job and found music. He started writing songs and it changed his life. After being someone who was isolated and closed off. Mardi describes his songs as “my heart on a table.” He tries to make simple music from an honest emotional place that, hopefully, people can connect with.
Singer-songwriter Alex Walsh has been a musical mainstay in the Bay Area for over 3 decades, known for his unique blend of folk rock and indie pop. Alex has captivated a diverse and growing global fanbase through over 10 records and 20 singles to date — collaborating with Grammy-winning engineers, playing at local institutions, and singing truth to power at 20,000 person protests on the Capitol’s steps along the way.
E.G. Phillips is a San Francisco based songwriter who creates lyric driven songs with his own special blend of whimsy and cinematic imagery which he uses to give a wry take on dealing with the longings of the heart and the madness of existence. You could call his music jazz-infused progressive folk — “Bob Dylan with flatted fifths” or “lounge music that falls somewhere between Tom Waits and They Might Be Giants.”
