600 Block Records is presenting a pair of California shows this December with Chicago jazz-funk outfit Imperial Boxmen, starting with the band’s San Francisco debut on Friday, December 6 at Murio’s Trophy Room. Joining the bill includes DJs Noel of Sweater Funk and the label’s co-founder and seasoned DJ Jeremiah Seraphine as 3 Degrees Chicago.
While an instrumental outfit, Imperial Boxmen makes their music lively by drawing influences from hip-hop, 70s funk, and both afrobeat and ethiopiques music. They consist of Chicago heavyweight players Kevin Ford (Chicago Afrobeat Project, the late Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen), Alex Austin (Fahreed Haque), Noah Plotkin, and Danjuma Gaskin (another Tony Allen collaborator and CAbP member).
That same weekend, Imperial Boxmen will be playing Los Angeles for 600 Block’s LA showcase the following night with labelmate and soul-pop artist Cole DeGenova (touring/session keyboardist for Gallant, Neal Francis, Daniel Villarreal, and more) and friend of the label Angie Swan (guitarist for Stevie Wonder, David Byrne, Kylie Minogue, and more).
Imperial Boxmen released their self-titled album in 2022 (Spotify, Bandcamp) with vinyl and they’re currently working on their follow-up record, also to be released off of 600 Block. They also recently played the label’s last showcase in Chicago, for electro-soul artist C3zR’s vinyl release in October.
