Event Details

Scientists agree that we are far from understanding life’s origin. Just defining “life” still remains a challenge! Two attributes of life do seem to be essential: metabolism and selective reproduction. Metabolism provides the energy for life, and selective reproduction provides the information. But how?! After providing key background insights, Dr. Deacon will help us explore the origin of life — in particular, the origin of life’s information. I hope you’ll come along!

Our Wonderfest speaker, Dr. Terrence Deacon, is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at UC Berkeley. He is the author of two particularly influential books: The Symbolic Species: The Co-evolution of Language and the Brain and Incomplete Nature: How Mind Emerged from Matter.
