Huge news! The Board of Supervisors has declared October 17th as “Broke-Ass Stuart Day!” This is a massive honor and a validation of all the work myself and the whole BAS team has done over the decades. Huge shout out my friend Supervisor Myrna Melgar for making this happen.
None of this would be possible without the people who kick in a few bucks each month to keep BAS afloat. I am very serious when I say that Broke-Ass Stuart would quite literally shut down tomorrow without the financial support of the folks on Patreon and PayPal. So, if you value the work we do as much as. the City and County of San Francisco does, please become a paying member of the Broke-Ass Stuart Patreon. By supporting BAS each month you’ll be helping make San Francisco, the Bay Area, and the world in general a slightly better place.
Come Celebrate Broke-Ass Stuart Day with Me!
Broke-Ass Stuart day is the same day as my book release party at Kilowatt in the Mission. So please come out and celebrate this awesomeness with me.
Here’s the Actual Proclamation:
Resolution declaring October 17, 2025, as Broke-Ass Stuart Day in the City and County of San Francisco to celebrate his spirited writings, cultural critiques, and humorous story-telling.
WHEREAS, Stuart Schuffman, known to San Franciscans and readers worldwide as “Broke-Ass Stuart,” has dedicated over two decades to chronicling, uplifting, and celebrating the City’s culture, arts, and people through his writing, publishing, and performances; and
WHEREAS, After showing up in San Francisco with nothing but a notebook, a hangover, and a dream of eating burritos while writing about dive bars, he decided to turn being broke into a literary career, starting with photocopied zines that eventually became guidebooks, a TV show, and the award winning BrokeAssStuart.com, one of the last scrappy, independent media outlets still telling San Francisco’s stories; and
WHEREAS, In an era where publications keep vanishing faster than affordable apartments, Broke-Ass Stuart has stubbornly continued to publish independent local journalism, telling the stories of artists, workers, weirdos, activists, and all the people who make San Francisco, San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, In addition to he and his team publishing over 15,000 articles on BrokeAssStuart.com, creating community projects such as the literary magazine, The Dreams I Dreamt: Letters to San Francisco, and running an unforgettable mayoral campaign just to mess with the establishment, Stuart has also found time to create the web series Shaky Ground, the live variety show The Kinda Late Show with Broke-Ass Stuart, some ridiculously snarky t-shirts, and other creative ventures that double as both cultural artifacts and inside jokes; and
WHEREAS, In October 2025, Stuart will publish The Worst of Broke-Ass Stuart: 20 Years of Love, Death, and Dive Bars, a landmark collection confirming what we all suspected: he’s been documenting San Francisco’s heart, soul, and hiccups long enough to deserve his own damn day; and
WHEREAS, San Francisco has always taken pride in its eccentrics, hustlers, loudmouths, and storytellers and Broke-Ass Stuart has spent his career making sure their voices remain heard, and their contributions remembered; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco declares October 17, 2025, as Broke-Ass Stuart Day in San Francisco.
