A long-empty, soggy lot on Market Street is set to become a 15-story affordable housing building for seniors, with a focus on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community.

Developed by Mercy Housing, the project will bring 187 studio and one-bedroom apartments for residents ages 62 and up, with income limits ranging between $16,000 up to $92,000 a year, considered “very low income.”

The development is funded by the city and state and will also reserve some housing for veterans, addressing a growing need as San Francisco’s senior population continues to rise.

The building will sit at the corner of Market and Duboce, directly across from Openhouse’s existing site at 1939 Market Street, creating part of a three-building mini campus. Openhouse will provide on-site services and programming aimed at reducing isolation, including support groups and community spaces designed to encourage connection. The project’s design includes open, shared areas and visible rainbow accents, a deliberate signal of inclusion in a neighborhood already home to several LGBTQ-focused resources.
