San Francisco is losing one of its homegrown retail icons. Williams Sonoma is closing its three-story Union Square store at 340 Post Street by the end of January 2026. The store, which has been in the building since 2003, was already marking down furniture, cookware, and specialty foods by up to 40%.

The company, founded in Sonoma by Chuck Williams in 1956, still has its corporate headquarters in Fort Mason, making this the first time Williams Sonoma will have no retail presence in its home city.

The space won’t stay empty for long. Luxury fashion brand Chanel bought the building for $63 million back in 2022 and is planning a new flagship store, complete with a redesigned storefront, atrium, and high-end interiors. There’s no opening date yet, but it is a big upgrade for the historic 1923 building.

Williams Sonoma still has locations around the Bay Area in Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Corte Madera, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and Santa Clara, so local fans can still get their cast-iron fix.
