SF’s Japanese Tea Garden “Peak” Cherry Blossom Bloom (March-April)

One of spring’s most fleeting spectacles is happening right now in Golden Gate Park. The Japanese Tea Garden hit peak cherry blossom bloom on March 20, 2026, which means this is the week to go.

About 60 cherry trees are flowering in rolling waves of pink and white, and SF residents can walk through the whole thing for free. The Yoshino cherries go first, with pale, almost-white blossoms that turn the canopy into something out of a Miyazaki film. The showier Kwanzan cherries follow with heavier, double-petaled pink blooms that extend the season into April.

Peak bloom doesn’t last long, so if you’re going, go this week.

Timed entry tickets are required for cherry blossom season. Tickets are free for San Francisco residents (valid ID required), veterans, Museums for All participants, and Gardens members. Everyone else can pick up a Gardens Pass, which lets you arrive anytime and includes three days of access to the Conservatory of Flowers and Botanical Garden.

Each reservation gives you a 60-minute arrival window. Once inside, you can stay until closing. No reentry, so plan accordingly.

Tip: Early mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays are the quietest windows. And if it’s drizzling, go anyway. Light rain makes the garden feel like you have the whole place to yourself.
