San Francisco is getting a new cultural district.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation to establish an official Irish Cultural District, likely located in the city’s southwest neighborhoods, including the Sunset.

City leaders say the designation recognizes the long history of Irish American families who settled in the area beginning in the 1920s and 1930s and continue to shape the community today.

Creating the district could unlock about $240,000 in city funding to support cultural programming, youth activities, and community events that celebrate Irish heritage.

The exact boundaries of the Irish Cultural District have not yet been finalized and will be determined by a committee in the coming months.
