Event Details

Be part of KALW’s live studio audience for a special edition of The Mother of it All, a podcast exploring the culture of modern motherhood.

Hosted by writers Miranda Rake and Sarah Wheeler, The Mother of it All goes beyond the usual parenting tropes to dig into the conversations that actually matter—offering warmth, humor, and deeply considered takes on everything from identity and relationships to the evolving realities of raising children today. Expect thoughtful dialogue, sharp insight, and a space that makes room for nuance, curiosity, and connection.

Miranda and Sarah will be joined by poet and wildland firefighter Rachel Richardson to discuss the intersection of art, climate, and care.

Be part of the conversation. Reserve your ticket now.

Sarah Wheeler is a writer and educational psychologist based in Oakland. She is the author of the popular Substack newsletter, Momspreading and of the former Good Enough Parenting column in Romper online. Her work on motherhood, media, education, relationships, and neurodiversity has appeared in publications such as RomperThe CutSalonThe Threepenny ReviewHuff Post, and Scary Mommy.

Miranda Rake is a writer based in Portland. She mostly writes about the culture of parenthood for publications like The Atlantic, The Cut, Parents, PDX Parent and more. Sometimes, she writes about other stuff, like coffee and tiki bars, for magazines like Imbibe and Portland Monthly. She has a masters in Food Studies and a bachelors in Comparative Religion, which kind of explains a lot.

Rachel Richardson is a poet whose most recent collection of poems, Smother, explores raising children in a burning world.  She is the Co-Founder of Left Margin LIT, a literary arts center in Berkeley and a trained wildland firefighter.
