San Francisco is getting a new kind of grocery store.

Local nonprofit 18 Reasons is teaming up with beloved SF grocery chain Bi-Rite and philanthropic foundation Crankstart to open Sunnydale Market, a nonprofit grocery store in San Francisco’s Sunnydale neighborhood in 2027.

The 2,800-square-foot market at 1515 Sunnydale Ave. will offer fresh produce, pantry staples, and culturally relevant foods at wholesale prices, reportedly averaging 35% to 45% below typical grocery store costs. The market will also accept SNAP and WIC benefits.

Unlike a traditional grocery store, Sunnydale Market will not sell alcohol, tobacco, or ultra-processed foods. Organizers say the goal is to provide affordable, healthy food options in one of San Francisco’s most underserved neighborhoods, where many residents live far from a full-service grocery store and transportation can be a challenge.

Bi-Rite will manage inventory and day-to-day operations, while 18 Reasons plans to offer nutrition education and cooking classes. Funding from Crankstart and other partners will help cover rent, wages, and utilities so groceries can be sold at reduced prices long-term.

The market will be located inside Amani, a new affordable housing development that’s part of the larger Sunnydale HOPE SF redevelopment project.
