Mountain Lake Science Saturdays is a lively series of talks by scientists studying topics relating to the San Francisco natural wonder, Mountain Lake, and its ecological restoration.

On the second Saturday from May to October, gather at the lake to hear researchers from a variety of disciplines talk on topics ranging from Archaeology to Zooplankton. Here’s your chance to ask the experts your questions about the science being done to save this lake.

How to get there: Enter the Presidio on Park Presidio heading north and go just past Mountain Lake.

Frog in the Fog, Part 1: Possibilities for amphibian and reptile reintroduction at Mountain Lake.

Amphibians, the first land vertebrates, contain over 7,100 known species and are the most threatened group of vertebrates today. In the last two decades, an emerging infectious fungal disease has caused declines and extinctions of amphibian species on a scale that has never been seen in human history.

Vance Vredenburg’s lab is studying why some amphibian species are susceptible to this pathogen while others are not. His recent work focuses on the success stories of frog populations that survived the epidemics. In partnership with the Presidio Trust, his lab is now working on restoring the amphibians that once occurred in Mountain Lake, including the California red-legged frog.

Vance Vredenburg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at San Francisco State University, a Research Associate and Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, and a Research Associate at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at UC Berkeley. He grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico, and received his bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Barbara and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.
