Calling all the early birds for a great hike. Watch the sun come up over the bay. They will take the route to the south gate and back thru the meadow loop about 6 miles. Dress in layers and bring water, snacks and sunscreen. They can stop and take a break and enjoy the scenery. This is very relaxing and uncrowded pace. The early start time allows you time to get to a good spot to watch sunrise. Don’t forget to bring your camera.
Wildlife at Sweeney Ridge includes hawks, deer, and a plethora of both native and introduced spring wildflowers. The sandy coastline and adjacent wind-protected valley of Thornton State Beach is a good venues for beach walking.
Distance, category, and difficulty:
This 6 mile out and back hike is moderately easy, with about 600 feet in elevation change. Trailhead elevation is around 655 feet. The highest elevation of the hike is around 1213 feet. Sneath Lane Trail climbs steadily, with one short steep section. Sweeney Ridge Trail is nearly level. The trails have a paved fire road and dirt fire roads.
