Today: Marcus Shelby Orchestra

Saturday July 9 @ 1 pm – 2:30 pm

Marcus Shelby and the 15-member orchestra will perform his new Legacy of Duke Ellington repertoire, featuring compositions from Ellington’s early years and Cotton Club era (1926-1933), his music during the 1930s-1950s, excerpts from his suites and long-form compositions, and Shelby’s commentary about Ellington’s legacy.

Shelby and the MSO will also perform instrumental pieces from Shelby’s jazz oratorio Soul of the Movement: Meditations on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which premiered in the 2010 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and sketches from his newest composition Green, discussing with the audience his ongoing work on this new piece.
