Event Details

The number of major, influential authors brought to the world’s attention by New Directions’s books is staggering. The very imprint itself meant “modernity” to the literary world. William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, Kay Boyle, Delmore Schwartz, Dylan Thomas, Thomas Merton, Denise Levertov, James Agee, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the list goes on and on.

New Directions also has been largely responsible for America’s interest in such translated writing as Rilke, Garcia Lorca, Kafka, Nabokov and Mishima. The history and direction of American Literature is simply impossible to think of without this press.

Join Willis Barnstone, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Denise Newman, Michael Palmer, Katy Silver, Declan Spring, Nathaniel Tarn, and special guests for a reading and celebration at City Lights Bookstore.
