Test the New Caltrain Cars: Try Out Bike Storage & Vote | SF

Caltrain is upgrading its overall bike capacity with the new electric trains. Your input is important to help inform the design of the new bike cars. Vote for your preferred onboard bike storage option. The poll closes at midnight on September 1, 2017.

Caltrain staff will be holding bike outreach at the 4th & King Station with sample displays of onboard bike storage. They are proposing two options and are looking for public input to help determine the preferred design. Bring your bike and test it out. Either a stacked version that allows more bikes on trains, or a hybrid version that allows fewer bikes on trains, but avoids stacking & shuffling of bikes.

With the increased service, both options will provide more bike space given the number of trains per hour. This is your chance to ask questions and test the different designs yourself to see how they work for you.

We encourage you to let Caltrain staff know which design you prefer and also share your experience of bringing your bike onboard. If you have recommendations around getting on and off with your bike, this is a great opportunity to give feedback as Caltrain continues designing their new trains.

Stacked Option #1

Pro – 72 bikes/train set (12.5% increase), Accommodates greater variety of bike types.
Con – Unless top bike, may need to move / shuffle others to access

Hybrid Option #2

Pro – 68 bikes/train set (8.3% increase), angled design avoids stacking / shuffling of bikes
Con – Four fewer bikes per train, may limit types of bikes accommodated
