San Francisco is moving ahead with a plan to transform Gashouse Cove in the Marina’s East Harbor into a new 5-acre public waterfront park next to Marina Green. The project, which has been debated and redesigned for years due to neighborhood pushback, just received conceptual approval from the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission.

The updated plan opens up more of the shoreline for public use, including a new community dock for kayaks and nonmotorized boating, expanded Bay Trail access, picnic areas, beach volleyball courts, and landscaped open space. A portion of the shallow waterfront basin will be converted from boat slips into recreation space, creating a more park-focused edge along the water.

Boat infrastructure is being reshuffled as part of the redesign, with fewer slips overall and changes to how they’re distributed in the East and West Harbors. The Gashouse Cove fuel dock will also be relocated to the West Harbor near the St. Francis Yacht Club, while city officials say fuel service will continue without interruption during construction.

The project is tied to a PG&E-led environmental cleanup of the historic site, which once housed a 19th-century power plant. While timelines for construction haven’t been finalized, the approval marks a key step toward opening up a long-industrial stretch of waterfront into new public park space.
