If you have looked up at Sutro Tower recently and noticed large black box-like structures moving up and down its legs, there is a reason for it. The iconic San Francisco landmark is in the middle of a major long-term restoration project, which includes its first full repaint in about 30 years along with a full environmental cleanup.

The black structures are sealed containment units used to safely remove decades-old lead paint. Crews are using high-pressure water systems and HEPA filtration to strip the paint while containing debris, which is collected and handled offsite. Once this process is complete, the tower will be repainted in its original Aviation Red and Aviation White color scheme.

The project began in 2023 and is expected to continue through the end of 2028. Officials say the goal is to restore the tower’s appearance while protecting it from decades of wind, salt air, and fog. What looks like a futuristic upgrade is really a careful restoration happening in plain sight.

Thanks to SF Gate for the scoop.
