SF History Night | Pacific Heights

Con men (and con women) are performance artists with larceny in their souls. They fascinate us with their ability to manipulate, their nerve, and their clever scams. Some of the most imaginative and fascinating con artists have practiced in San Francisco. Whether posing as a successful miner, a prosperous widow looking for matrimony, or an aristocratic physician, they have separated us from our money with great aplomb.

Crime historian Paul Drexler will discuss some of these San Francisco scams and scammers, including perhaps the greatest quack of the 20th century, and one of the most brilliant long cons in history.

Paul is a crime historian, tour guide, and writer. He has a regular column, “Notorious Crooks,” in the Sunday San Francisco Examiner. He collaborated with the late Kevin Mullen, retired SFPD deputy police chief and expert on San Francisco crime, to develop his walking tours, Crooks Tour San Francisco. He is the 2017 recipient of the SFHA’s Oscar Lewis Award, which honors authors, publishers, or lecturers who have written books on San Francisco’s history or otherwise helped educate the public on matters of San Francisco history.

Limited parking in schoolyard (entrance on Elizabeth St.), but additional parking is available on surrounding streets. Muni: 24-Divisadero and 48-Quintara stop at Castro and 24th streets; 35-Eureka stops at Diamond and 24th streets.
