In celebration of the de Young museum’s 125th anniversary, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco just announced The de Young Open, a juried community art exhibition welcoming submissions relating to the theme “On the Edge,” by artists from the nine Bay Area counties.

Artists exhibiting work will be able to offer their pieces for sale and will retain 100 percent of the proceeds.

Applications open June 1st and will be chosen in July. This is all assuming, of course, that things get back to “normal” and they’ll be able to showcase their artwork in a public space.

The acceptable artwork guidelines are fairly flexible and can be 2D, 3D or video, but a few interesting prohibited items include wood or food (attracts pests), yarn, liquids, balloons, glitter and any electrical elements like lights, neon, etc…

How to Submit Artwork

  • Online Applications open June 1 and will be available on the de Young website.
  • Residents from the nine Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma, 18 years of age or older, are welcome to submit.
  • Theme: “On the Edge” – Artists are encouraged, though not required, to address the concept of “On the Edge,” which references not only the Bay Area’s geographic location on the Pacific Rim, but also the region’s historical reputation for leading-edge, cutting-edge, or edgy culture and creativity.
  • Artworks will be considered through the Museums’ online application form, which will be available beginning on June 1, 2020. Artworks will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until June 14 or until the exhibition is filled.
  • Artworks should be new and created between 2018 and 2020. Each artist may submit digital imagery for up to two artworks for possible inclusion.
  • Artworks submitted will be reviewed for acceptance by a committee of curators and other art professionals. Artists will be notified in July if their artworks have been accepted or declined.
  • As a gesture of support in this challenging time, artists will be permitted to sell their works after the exhibition and to retain the proceeds.
