Race and science stand at the core of how humans have separated and marginalized others.

The Hidden History of Slavery in California and Eugenics is a four-module course for teachers in the bay area region. Participants will explore the history of slavery in California and the role that scientific racism played in defending this system. Educators will be introduced to a variety of resources, participant-centered pedagogical approaches they can leverage in their classrooms, and be introduced to new scholars.

Over the course, we will explore the “What” of these histories. What was the scope and duration of slavery in California? What was/is eugenics, and how was this ideological movement related to the scientific racism used to justify and uphold the institution of slavery? What are the implications of this history for the practice of democracy in the present? With this knowledge, what should we do now when it comes to educating the next generation.

Educators will conclude the course by exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with teaching this history, complicating the historical narrative, and engaging students in this process of historical illumination.
