The Western Addition community has been weaving a new reality for Buchanan Street Mall since 2014. A Vision Plan was published in March 2017 and the conceptual design for all five blocks was approved in April 2020.
With the passing of the Health and Recovery Bond in November 2020, a joint green infrastructure partnership with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, a special California budget allocation from Senator Wiener, and the award of a Prop 68 Statewide Parks Grant, the Recreation and Parks Department has secured funding to renovate three blocks and all intersections of Buchanan Street Mall as part of Phase 1 construction. Phase 1 is anticipated to break ground in early 2023.

Key Project Goals

  • Safety, lighting, and beautification
  • Connect all blocks and unify the community
  • Tell the story of the community and the neighborhood
  • Social interaction and multi-generational recreation
  • Skills training and jobs creation
Having refined the design for the Turk – Golden Gate block in 2021, this survey is aimed at present-truthing the concept plan and seeking final community input on program elements within the Eddy – Turk and the McAllister – Fulton blocks.
