San Francisco has listened. Now that it looks like JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park is going car-free, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is trying to address ADA concerns by adding more ADA parking and accessibility.

After hearing concerns from older people and people with disabilities that closing some roads to vehicles will limit their access to Golden Gate Park, the city has announced they’re expanding and improving blue zone parking and ADA access to museum amenities.

By the end of the year, there will be more than 60 blue zone spaces within short walking distances to the Museums. Improvements to the Bandshell lot will also include re-paved walking surfaces, a new ADA-accessible path to the Tea Garden, and more ADA improvements like curb ramps throughout the area.

Park users are also free to make use of drop-off and pick-up zones right in from of the De Young and Cal Academy.

The original proposal expanded and improved parking and ADA access with the addition of 28 blue zone spaces near the museums: three on Nancy Pelosi Drive at JFK Drive, five on Martin Luther King Drive south of Music Concourse Drive and 20 new ADA parking spaces in the Golden Gate Bandshell Parking lot. Plus they’ll be re-paving walking surfaces, adding a new ADA-accessible path to the Japanese Tea Garden, and making more ADA improvements such as curb ramps throughout the area. The Bandshell Parking Lot project broke ground Monday, February 28.
