Back before the AIDS crisis, the secluded Ringold Alley in SOMA was, ahem, the go-to place for gay men to have a little rendezous after a night out at Folsom’s leather bars. Ringold is a lot quieter now as a tree-lined alleyway with row houses. But the alley’s history isn’t forgotten. Stroll down Ringold and you’ll see historic markers, sidewalk bulb-outs painted like the Leather Pride flag and bronze “boot prints” embedded in the concrete in tribute to the men who once cruised the alley. At this special “Ringold Revival” event, enjoy history walks, music, new art displays and a special “Boot Walk.”

To celebrate the recent repairs and maintenance to the Ringold Leather History Alley, the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District, which organized and managed the work, and Soma West CBD, which funded it, are hosting a block party.
- History tours at 1 pm and 2 pm by noted historian, and District board member, Gayle S. Rubin
- Live painting with Josh Katz
- Rope bondage suspension with Two Knotty Boys
- Caricatures by Paul Gallo
In honor of the Alley’s bronze bootprints, sixteen local artists are each turning a combat boot into an art piece. The boots will be on display for online bidding as well as during the event for a silent auction. Many of the artists will be on hand to discuss their work.
