SFMOMA’s Festive Free Days for “Sitting on Chrome” Exhibition (Aug. 3-Oct. 5)

SFMOMA’s First Thursday in August celebrates the opening of Sitting on Chrome: Mario Ayala, rafa esparza, and Guadalupe Rosales. Through sculpture, painting, performance, photography and sound, three Los Angeles-based artists center lowrider car culture and cruising as a practice of resistance and community visibility.

FREE for Bay Area Locals – Tickets Required (limited supply)

On First Thursdays, SFMOMA offers free museum admission for all Bay Area residents from 1–8 p.m. The Sitting on Chrome celebration from 6–8 p.m. will feature music sets by DJ Brown Amy and RBL Posse as well as food and drinks available for purchase. ID required for guests 21 and older who intend to purchase alcoholic beverages.

Sunday, September 10, 2023, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Free for up to four adults accompanying one child or teen (eighteen and younger). Reserve your free tickets when they become available.

Join SFMOMA and our friends at the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) for a day of hands-on artmaking, story time, performances and a scavenger hunt, all inspired by the many Latinx artists whose work is currently on view at the museum. On Free Family Days, up to four adults can get in free when accompanied by a child 18 or younger.

SFMOMA’s First Thursday in October will feature a performance by Sitting on Chrome artist rafa esparza as he activates his Corpo RanfLA: Terra Cruiser sculpture in front of Diego Rivera’s Pan American Unity mural in the Roberts Family Gallery on Floor 1. The day will also include the premiere of an original SFMOMA short documentary about the Sitting on Chrome artists and screenings of Debra Koffler and Vero Majano’s film Why I Ride Low and Slow (2010), highlighting 1980s lowrider culture in San Francisco’s Mission District.
