Event Details

Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

On October 14, an annular solar eclipse will be visible across the United States.  Join us for a viewing party and an exploration of how eclipses occur! Learn more about the science behind the “Ring of Fire” eclipse. While the eclipse itself will be over just after 10:00 a.m., join us in the 3D Theater at 10:30 to learn from Dr. Sam Walton about solar winds.  The Lawrence will have eclipse glasses for sale leading up to and during the eclipse.

Solar Activities

Ultraviolet Beads
Use special light-sensitive beads to learn about the Sun’s UV rays and the ways we can protect ourselves from the Sun’s harmful light.

Solar Clock
Build your own paper sundial and learn how to tell the time of day using sunlight.

Pinhole Sun Viewer
Explore a simple and creative way to safely observe the Sun by building your own pinhole sun viewer.

Learn From a Scientist

Have you ever heard of “solar wind”? Dr. Sam Walton from Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory will guide visitors through the origins of solar winds from the Sun to the Earth and describe why they are so concerning for us here on Earth. Attend Dr. Walton’s talk at 10:30 a.m. in the 3D Theater, entitled Space Weather – Protecting the Earth from the Ravages of the Sun.
