In Unity We Rise: A Series Honoring Black History Month
An educational and empowering event that aims to celebrate the rich contributions of the Black community.
Date: Every Sunday in February
Location: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church1111 O’Farrell Street, San Francisco, CA
Immerse yourself in thought-provoking discussions and inspiring films that shed light on the triumphs, struggles and stories of the Black community.
- On February 4th join us at 10:00 AM in Heritage Hall (1111 O’Farrell St.) as we kickstart the series with a captivating Adult Forum led by Dr. Sheryl Davis the Executive Director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission. Dr. Davis will delve into the powerful and transformative nature of music and song in the Black culture exploring its ability to bring joy and healing to the community.
- Continuing the conversation on February 11th at 10:00 AM in Heritage Hall (1111 O’Farrell St.) Wilma Batiste, a Board Member of the San Francisco Interfaith Council and member of Neighborhood Baptist Church serving as Health Ministry Leader/Coordinator, will address the pressing issue of healthcare inequities in the Black community. Gain valuable insights into the challenges faced and the steps needed for equitable healthcare access for all.
- On February 18th at 6:00 PM join us in the ULC Auditorium (1031 Franklin St.) for the heartwarming movie “Ruby Bridges” based on the true story of Ruby Bridges one of the first black students to attend integrated schools in New Orleans, Louisiana. Witness her inspiring journey and the importance of resilience and determination.
- Closing the series on February 25th we present “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” at 7:30 PM in the ULC Auditorium (1031 Franklin St.). This engaging and critically acclaimed film explores the complexities of identity and community in the vibrant city of San Francisco.We will provide basic folding chairs, but if you’d like something more comfortable, feel free to bring your own blankets, pillows and comfort items. Additionally, feel free to bring your favorite snacks to savor during the screenings.
