New Waterfront Park Coming to SF’s Dogpatch Neighborhood

A former power plant will be home to the new SF park with art, gardens, and waterfront access

San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood is set for a major new public amenity with plans to transform a historic industrial site into a vibrant waterfront park. The interim green space, dubbed Prequel Park, will temporarily activate nearly 3 acres along the central waterfront, opening up the area to residents and visitors for the first time in more than 160 years.

The project sits on the larger Power Station redevelopment — a sprawling 29-acre site slated to deliver thousands of new homes, retail shops, office space, and a medical research center. The redevelopment’s first residential building is nearly complete and expected to welcome its first tenants later this year. But while a planned boutique hotel has been delayed by ongoing challenges in San Francisco’s hospitality market, developers have shifted gears to prioritize public space.

Prequel Park will bring gardens, a running and hiking track, sports courts, and play areas for all ages to the waterfront, along with an outdoor amphitheater designed for community events, weddings, and performances. Food and beverage options and public restrooms will also make the park a convenient and inviting destination.

A standout feature will be the preservation and creative reuse of the site’s historic 300-foot chimney stack, a landmark remnant from the power plant that occupied the site for decades. The stack will be repurposed as a temporary art gallery, anchoring the park’s cultural offerings. Nearby, the skeletal remains of the former turbine hall will be transformed into lush greenspace, weaving nature into the industrial fabric.
