SF’s Brand New 38-Mile Trail Circles the Entire City
San Francisco now has a walking route that traces nearly every edge of the city. Called The Roundabout, the new 38-mile perimeter trail connects shoreline paths, neighborhood greenways, parks, and public art into one continuous loop.
The trail starts and ends at the Ferry Building and can be completed in about 13 to 14 hours by fast walkers. But organizers say most people will tackle it in shorter sections. The route is divided into six segments, each starting near a major transit stop, with Daly City BART marking the halfway point.
Highlights include Bayview’s Heron’s Head Park, Hilltop Park, Shipyard SF’s outdoor art installations, the carved wood statues at Cayuga Playground, and Sisterhood Gardens. The trail also passes by Lake Merced Drive, site of the state’s final duel in 1859.
The project comes from the creators of the Crosstown Trail and Double Cross, popular discovery hikes launched in 2019 and 2023. To make the route more engaging, organizers added four miles of detours into parks and neighborhoods not typically seen by visitors.
The launch is part of Crosstober, a monthlong series of more than 20 guided walks ranging from short neighborhood strolls to full-day treks around the entire loop.
