Big news for SF film lovers and everyone who missed the Castro: The Castro Theatre has just announced its first slate of upcoming movies after a 2-year break, marking the long-awaited return of film programming to San Francisco’s most beloved movie palace.
After months of debate over whether the renovated venue would continue showing films, or focus more on concerts, The Castro is indeed bringing some movies back. The theatre will once again host screenings and film festivals, including events from SF Silent Film Festival, MOViES FOR MANiACS, and SFFILM.
Here’s what’s coming up in 2026:
- A Deeper Love: The Story of Miss Peppermint with special guest Peppermint
- The Last Black Man in San Francisco with special guest writer/director Joe Talbot
- Hedwig & The Angry Inch (25th Anniversary Screening in 35mm) with John Cameron Mitchell performing live with Skip The Needle
Tickets for these screenings go on sale Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10 am.
Even better, the Castro’s full movie calendar returns in February, featuring repertory classics, singalongs, 35/70mm screenings, and student and senior pricing.
And that’s not all. Frameline Film Festival is officially returning to The Castro for its 50th anniversary celebration. Frameline50 will take place June 17 to 21 and June 25 to 27, 2026, marking a major homecoming for one of San Francisco’s most iconic festivals.
Founded in 1977, Frameline (originally The San Francisco International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival) is the longest running, largest, and most widely recognized LGBTQ+ film festival in the world. With more than 60,000 annual attendees, the festival remains one of the Bay Area’s biggest and most beloved arts events.
The Castro neighborhood, as well as the film community across the Bay Area and beyond, have been eagerly awaiting Frameline’s return since 2023. Its comeback marks a powerful moment in the theatre’s renewed commitment to both film and community.
