Event Details

Discover the stories of real people facing their fears and finding support at San Francisco’s airport with KALW journalists & local experts.

San Francisco International Airport is more than a place to catch a flight, it’s a public crossroads where hardship, hope, anxiety, and resilience all intersect. KALW’s SFO Show is a live event mini-series exploring the rarely seen sides of this iconic Bay Area place.

On Tuesday, March 10, KALW journalists take you on a journey to explore the rare kinds of care people at SFO need.

First, Erin Bump examines homelessness at the airport, revealing the logistical, emotional, and ethical complexities of providing care in this transit hub. Bump will share clips from her audio reporting and perform a live interview with a representative for LifeMoves, an organization that connects unhoused people with housing and resources.

Then, Evan Roberts goes beyond the security gates for an inside look at the Fear of Flying Clinic where nervous travelers face deep anxieties with the help of community, expertise, and hands-on support. He’ll be joined by Jody Yarborough, the clinic’s volunteer chairwoman and former client participant, to discuss how her organization helps people overcome their fears.

Hear these stories live and in person, meet the reporters, and connect with your neighbors at this KALW community event.

Erin Bump is an award-winning audio producer and portrait photographer living in San Francisco. She is a graduate of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Once voted “biggest mensch” by a jury of her peers, Erin has been to all 50 states and is on a perpetual quest to find the finest cup of coffee in America. Listen to her recent story about homeless outreach and support on the California Report Magazine.

Evan Roberts is a producer, journalist, educator, and artist based in San Francisco. He has contributed stories to KALW since 2006. He’s worked with The New York Times, IDEO, Substack, and the Eames Institute for Infinite Curiosity. His documentary work has taken him from interviewing asylum-seekers in South Africa to skydiving with Marines in Texas to searching for the soul of a famous DJ in a Pasadena storage unit. He holds an MFA in Film Production from the University of Texas at Austin and is a graduate of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Listen to his recent story about the Fear of Flying Clinic on Crosscurrents.

Come early to see Raymundo Valdez’s Prismatic City: Landmarks in Light, a solo art exhibition showing the city as it lives: layered, luminous, & constantly changing. RSVP for the March 6 opening here. The show is on view at KALW’s Live Event Studio Art Gallery through April 10.

There is a $10 – $20 sliding scale suggested donation for this event. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
