Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

Art Reception & Brazilian Jazz | Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

Celebrate the art of mapping and aerial viewpoints through music, a special lecture, artist demonstrations, and art-making.

6-8:30 pm: Artist Demonstration with Carlo Abruzzese (Piazzoni Murals Room)
Mapping Cultural Landscapes: Reinterpreting Demographics in the Bay Area. Carlo Abruzzese’s new work integrates the disparate worlds of fine art and quantitative information, creating images that encourage the viewer to reinterpret our world. He is currently working on a series of paintings that map demographic statistical data from the US Census into works of fine art.

6-8:45 pm: Closing Reception for August Artist-in-Residence: Peggy Gyulai (Kimball Education Gallery)
Celebrate the artist’s residency with light refreshments in the Kimball Education Gallery. Peggy Gyulai’s work explores the connections between music and the expressive possibilities of paint on canvas. She approaches music as a subject, object, and inspiration, and, like Richard Diebenkorn, invokes the dynamic tension between abstraction and representation in order to create substance from the most ephemeral phenomena.

6:30-8:30 pm: Live Music by Jazz Bliss Brazil (Wilsey Court)
This year California Brazil Camp has arranged for Jazz Bliss Brazil to perform an enchanting mix of Brazilian music and classic American jazz at the de Young. The group features the stellar vocals and engaging presence of Carol Bach-y-Rita, singing in both Portuguese and English; the passionate and lyrical saxophone and flute of Robert Kyle; and the fantastic Larry Steen on bass. The group will also feature two outstanding musicians from Brazil, guitarist Chico Pinheiro and drummer Mauricio Zottarelli. It will be a rare opportunity to hear this group perform live.

7-8 pm: Special Lecture | A Sense of Place: Diebenkorn and the Aerial View (Koret Auditorium)
A Sense of Place: Diebenkorn and the Aerial View, Emma Acker, assistant curator of American art, FAMSF
