Max Headroom (1985)
Ca-Ca-Catch the wave and witness the birth of ’80s icon Max Headroom. Originally a UK Channel 4 movie, “20 Minutes Into The Future” envisioned a television-dominated future of cheeky attitude, pirate broadcasts, and blipverps: commercials that keep you tuned-in, then tune you out with spontaneous combustion. Before the soda campaigns, the WGN Hack, and the talkshow appearances, Max Headroom was just a rad malfunctioning avatar. And though billed as the “The World’s First Computer-Generated TV Host,” Max was actually portrayed by actor Matt Frewer —with glommed on make-up, fiberglass and digital voice sampling. This cut comes straight from VHS with all the standard artifacts and charm. Featuring Divine covering the Vaselines, Matt Orphan Black Frewer, and many painted diagonal lines. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel.
