International Flor y Canto Literary Festival comes to the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts with a historic reading of Latino poets on Friday, May 15, 2015.

The Poet Laureates reading brings together some of the important Latino poets of our time, including:

  • Luis J. Rodriguez, author of the classic Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. and My Nature is Hunger and current Los Angeles Poet Laureate
  • Daisy Zamora, acclaimed Nicaraguan poet, author of Riverbed of Memory, Demetria Martinez, author of Mother Tongue
  • Lorna Dee Cervantes, author of Emplumada,
  • Alejandro Murguía, San Francisco Poet Laureate
  • special invited guest, Roberto Vargas, Honorary Poet Laureate of the Mission District

Doors open at 7 pm, reading starts at 7:30 pm. Books by these authors will be on sale.

The International Flor y Canto Literary Festival will also host an historic evening with the internationally acclaimed Nicaraguan poet Ernesto Cardenal, considered the greatest living poet of Latin America. Author of more than thirty books and awarded all major Latin American literary prizes, his reading in Spanish will be accompanied by an English translation. In celebration of his 90th birthday and a life of poetry and activism.
