Muni has a full-scale model of the brand new LRV (light rail vehicle) on display at the Ferry Plaza for you to kick the tires and take a walk around for one day only – until 4pm on June 16, 2015.
The City will soon gain 40 new light-rail vehicles, vastly expanding Muni’s train fleet. This will add to the previously announced 175 new LRVs, which will slowly replace older trains beginning in 2016.

Full-Scale Model of SF’s New Muni Metro Trains – Light Rail Vehicle
Muni is showcases a full-scale model of Muni’s new light rail vehicles set to arrive in 2016 and in service by 2017. The full-scale model represents design features informed by public input gathered last fall, including a new seating configuration, new interior color schemes, new exterior design and a host of other features that will improve service for hundreds of thousands of daily riders, including:
- Reduced door and step malfunctions, which are the single biggest reason for delays on the
- Improved safety by shortening braking distance and improving visibility for operators.
- Quieter operation on rails.
- Compared to our current LRV fleet, these new vehicles will last 10 times longer before significant maintenance is required (Trains now can go 2500 miles. New trains will go 25k)
- The new vehicles will last 10 times longer than current fleet
