On Sunday, September 18th, the Mill Valley Public Library will open its doors after hours for MAD Magazine Senior Editor Joe Raiola’s nationally acclaimed one-man show “The Joy of Censorship” which uses insight and humor to reflect on the day’s most hotly debated first amendment issues.
From Sarah Palin’s now infamous gun sight map to the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church, no subject is off-limits during Raiola’s program.
The Joy of Censorship sheds light on the ongoing arguments over banned books, movie ratings, the FCC, the Patriot Act and the true meaning of obscenity. It also traces the colorful history of MAD Magazine, from renegade publisher Williams Gaines’ historic showdown with the U.S. Senate over comic book censorship to MAD’s emergence as a revolutionary satiric force.
The program will conclude with a slide presentation spotlighting some of MAD’s most controversial and outrageous covers and articles, followed by a lively Q&A session.
The Joy of Censorship will take place September 18th at 7pm in the Main Reading Room of the Mill Valley Public Library. Adult language will be used. The performance is free and open to the public, but is limited to those 15 and up.
Free, but registration is recommended.
